WHO Report Highlights Health Inequities Faced by Persons with Disabilities

Disability is a natural part of being human, affecting 1.3 billion people worldwide, or 16% of the global population. However, individuals with disabilities often experience significant health inequities due to ableism, stigma, and discriminatory policies. These factors, combined with poverty, exclusion, and poor living conditions, contribute to early death, poor health, and limited daily functioning. The WHO Global Report on Health Equity outlines 40 actions for governments and health partners, such as including disability in national health policies, strengthening rehabilitation services, and addressing social and environmental health determinants to create a more equitable global health system

Friendship Circle of Virginia Hosts Inaugural Disability Expo

On January 6, 2024, Friendship Circle of Virginia organized its first Disability Expo at the Richmond Raceway Complex, showcasing the talents of individuals with disabilities. The event featured over 50 vendors, interactive activities like a sensory room, petting zoo, and photo booth, and a focus on resources to improve quality of life. This milestone highlighted the importance of inclusion while fostering community connections. Friendship Circle of Virginia plans to host similar events, continuing its mission to raise awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and promoting a more inclusive society.
